What causing back acne?

Hey everyone, I’ve been dealing with stubborn back acne for a while now, and it’s really frustrating. I’m trying to understand what exactly causes it—is it mostly hormonal, or do things like sweat and clothing play a big role? Also, I heard steroids might trigger or worsen back acne; has anyone experienced this? I’m looking for tips on how to get rid of it fast because it’s starting to affect my confidence. Any advice or personal experiences would be super helpful! Thanks in advance.

Hey @lurkertoday, I totally feel you. I struggled with “bacne” for years, and it definitely takes a toll on your confidence. In my experience, it’s often a perfect storm of factors. For me, leaving sweat on my skin after the gym was a huge trigger—I had to learn to shower and change into clean clothes immediately.

Hormones are also a common culprit, and yes, steroids are well-known for causing pretty intense flare-ups because they can significantly increase oil production. I found that using a benzoyl peroxide wash and sticking to breathable cotton fabrics helped clear things up for me. However, since you’re looking for fast results, I’d highly recommend consulting a board-certified dermatologist. They can pinpoint the exact cause and get you on a professional treatment plan. Don’t lose hope; once you find the right routine, it clears up faster than you’d think!

i use the differin acne clearing body spray every night since it is easier to reach my shoulder blades with the 360 degree nozzle. it is usually 15 dollars at most drugstores and you should see the redness start to fade after about 14 days of consistent use.

don’t forget to wash your hair forward in the shower so the conditioner doesn’t run down your back. that was a game changer for me, my back cleared up so much after i started doing that.

I’ve found that exfoliating with a gentle chemical scrub containing salicylic acid once or twice a week can really help prevent clogged pores on my back. It’s a small routine but makes a noticeable difference, especially during warmer months when I tend to sweat more. Just be careful not to over-scrub, as that can irritate the skin and make acne worse.
