Microneedling versus laser for texture at this age

I’ve been noticing more texture and fine lines as I get older and I’ve heard a lot about microneedling and laser treatments. I’m really anxious about anything that might make me look too fake or frozen, especially as it’s my first time considering something more than just basic skincare. I want to keep a natural look, but I’m not sure which option might be better for skin texture enhancements at my age. Have any of you tried both or have recommendations on which might give the best results without making me look overdone?

Had laser, skin still looks like a dried prune

At 53, I found microneedling really helped with skin texture after my weight loss journey, especially since I was already planning body contouring. The downtime was minimal, which was great since I’m still balancing work as an insurance agent. Laser treatments can be more intense and pricey, so if you want something less disruptive, microneedling might be the way to go.

At 57, I’ve tried both microneedling and laser treatments for improving skin texture, and my experience might help. For microneedling, I did a series of three sessions spaced about a month apart. The downtime was minimal, a couple of days of redness and slight peeling, but the texture improvement was subtle. It helped with fine lines, but if you’re dealing with thicker scars or pigmentation, it might not be enough on its own.

On the laser side, I went with a fractional CO2 laser, which is more aggressive. The healing was definitely longer, almost two weeks of redness and flaking. It was a bit intimidating, especially since I was worried about how it would look with my fair skin and some sun damage. However, after about six weeks, the improvement in overall texture and firmness was noticeable to me and others. It really addressed the deeper lines and unevenness better than microneedling did.

I’m curious if anyone here has had success combining the two, like starting with microneedling and then doing a laser session later, or vice versa? Also, has anyone noticed differences in how their skin reacts to treatments depending on hormone changes around this age? I suspect estrogen plays a role in skin healing and collagen production, at least from what I’ve read.

I’ve tried microneedling a couple of times and really liked the way my skin looked afterward, even if the texture wasn’t totally perfect. I’ve heard laser can do more for smoothing out roughness but it also sounds more aggressive so I’m a bit hesitant.

i’ve been eyeing laser but worried about downtime with my busy schedule.
