About a year ago, I thought I’d finally gotten rid of my melasma with a combination of creams and some laser treatments. Well, it’s come back and it seems even more stubborn this time. I’m worried because we’re planning a big family reunion outdoors next month, and I don’t want to look like a leopard in the pictures with my grandkids. Has anyone else wrangled this back under control after it reappeared? What worked the second time around?
I found retinol creams helped a bit after my eyelid surgery, but for melasma coming back, I’d say just keep sunscreen on religiously. Don’t think there’s a magic fix, it’s mostly about prevention from my experience.
I’ve found that sticking consistently to my prescribed skin routine each morning really helps keep my melasma at bay. Sunscreen is a must, of course, but I also added a gentle lightening serum with vitamin C and licorice root extract, which seemed to make a difference for me. It’s a slow process but I do think keeping things regular makes a real difference the second time around.
Melasma can be so stubborn. I’ve had some success with regular laser treatments and a good antioxidant serum, but it’s definitely a process. Staying consistent with sun protection has made a big difference for me too
Same here, struggling to find a solution too
Oh girl, melasma is such a stubborn thing, isn’t it? I had it come back after a couple of years of clear skin and totally freaked out because I thought I had it under control! What helped me second time around was really dialing in on the skincare. I added a prescription strength hydroquinone cream along with a strong layer of physical sunscreen like EltaMD UV Clear every single day. Consistency is key! I also started using a gentle, skin-brightening serum with tranexamic acid which I found really made a difference after about 8 weeks.
Another thing that worked wonders for me was doing a series of laser treatments. I opted for fractional resurfacing, I did four sessions spaced about a month apart. It’s a bit pricey, around $300 per session, but I swear it helped fade the dark patches significantly. I also wanted to ask, did you try any chemical peels or microneedling? I read that they can sometimes help boost the brightening effect when combined with skincare. Just make sure to really protect your skin from sun exposure afterward, melasma hates the sun!
