Hi everyone, it’s Michelle! I’ve finally decided to start looking into a tummy tuck after thinking about it for years, but honestly, I’m feeling pretty overwhelmed. There are so many doctors in my area, and I have no idea who to trust or where to even begin my search.
How did you all find your surgeons? Did you rely on word-of-mouth, or are there specific sites I should check for honest reviews? I really want to know how to vet credentials and what “red flags” I should watch out for during consultations. I’d love any advice for a complete beginner!
Hi Michelle, welcome! It’s totally normal to feel overwhelmed—this is a big decision. When I started my journey, the absolute first thing I looked for was board certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. That’s the gold standard for safety and training.
I’d suggest starting on the ASPS (American Society of Plastic Surgeons) website to find vetted providers in your area. Don’t just rely on Instagram; look for consistent, long-term results. During consultations, watch out for surgeons who pressure you to book immediately or dismiss your questions—that’s a huge red flag. You want someone who listens to your goals and is transparent about the risks. Take your time, trust your gut, and don’t be afraid to walk away if you don’t feel 100% comfortable. You’ve got this!
Same boat here, definitely keep looking for more reviews.
I just googled some local clinics and picked the one with the nicest website and the most before and after pictures. Usually if they have alot of photos they must be good, right?
I’d also check to see if they have operating privileges at an actual hospital, not just an in office surgery suite
While many factors go into choosing a surgeon, one aspect to consider is their specialization in the procedure you’re looking to have done. Some surgeons may focus more on body contouring, like tummy tucks, while others might concentrate on facial procedures. As a nurse here in Grand Rapids, I’ve often seen that those with more targeted experience tend to have more refined techniques in their specialty area. During consultations, don’t hesitate to ask about their specific experience with tummy tucks and their complication rates. It’s about feeling confident that they know the intricacies of what you’re aiming to achieve.
So many options, it’s definitely overwhelming to choose!
I ended up calling a few offices and asking if I could speak to past patients, even just briefly on the phone. Some said yes, which helped a lot. Felt weird asking but better than just going off photos or reviews that might be fake
